Figures released Tuesday by the  Bureau of Labor Statistics show the  Youngstown-Warren Metropolitan area had a 6.9% unemployment rate in March.

The last time the metro area had a lower rate was in May of 2008, when 6.3% of the valley's labor force was out of work.

The March unemployment figure is eight  tenths of a percent better than the February rate of 7.7%, and 1.6% better than the March rate from one year ago.

Columbiana County reported the lowest March unemployment, with a rate of 6.6%.

Below is a breakdown of March unemployment rates:

  • Mahoning County   7.0
  • Trumbull County    7.1
  • Warren                    7.6
  • Youngstown            8.3
  • Ohio                        6.1
  • U.S.                         6.7

Eighteen thousand people in the valley were still collecting unemployment last month, compared to 22-thousand-300 in March of 2013.
