Youngstown State University narrows list of candidates for president search

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown State University has narrowed it's list of candidates, to become the university's next president from 38 down to six.

Those six names will not be released until each candidate is contacted. Meaning, Trustees will not yet say if former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, is on the list.

"We have to clarify with each and every individual candidate that they are willing to be considered for this position at this time, even if they had agreed to apply in principle before," said Dr. Sudershan Garg, chairman of YSU Board of Trustees.

Prior to the the YSU Trustee's meeting, the University of Akron announced Tressel as one of their three finalists, in their search for a new president.

YSU officials say that will not affect their process in choosing the best candidate for YSU.

"We will take our own time and we don't want to rush our judgment on the procedure and we will go through the process like we had decided before," said Garg.

YSU will contact the list of six candidates, if anyone is no longer interested in the position officials say they've also put together a list of secondary candidates to select from.

The goal is to interview at least six candidates through online video by early next week.

Then in the days to follow, narrow the list to three finalists.

Those finalists will be asked to visit the campus before trustees make their final selection, which they now expect to make by the third week in May.
