HOWLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio -

Howland school officials say they notified parents on Friday that a toy gun was found in a backpack.

High School Principal Michael Pollifrone told police that a plastic air soft gun was found in a book bag belonging to a student.

Police describe the gun as "a clear white plastic" toy gun with an orange tip.

According to a police report, at no time was the gun used in a threatening manner towards anyone in the school. The student claims he brought the toy gun because he was going to a friends house after school.

After consultation with the Trumbull County Juvenile Prosecutor, it was decided that the incident will be handled internally within the school.

School officials made an announcement notifying students and staff of the incident and informed parents through the "One Call" system.

According to the student handbook, the "One Call Now" system is an extremely efficient phone system that allows school officials to record a message and send it to every family within minutes.

The student was released to the custody of his father.
