Decision on possible Mooney move could come next week

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A decision about moving Cardinal Mooney High School from Youngstown to the suburbs will not come by Wednesday as originally announced.

Superintendent of  Catholic Schools for the Youngstown Diocese, Nicholas Wolsonovich tells 21 News that he expects to receive an update this week on a fund raising campaign to build a new state of the art school in southern Mahoning County.

The Diocese has been investigating the purchase of three separate locations on, or in close proximity of Western Reserve Road between Market Street and Tippecanoe Road.

Wolsonovich says he expects an announcement Bishop George Murry next week.

Catholic School Management, a professional consulting firm is assisting Cardinal Mooney study and plan the proposed new school.

According to an earlier statement from the Diocese, as long as the initial campaign raised $23 million by the end of April, construction of a new high school would proceed.

The Bishop announced in July, that the high school would stay at it's current location on the city's south side, but after learning about the possible cost of removing asbestos from the existing building, officials reversed their decision.
