No charges after deadly pileups on Ohio Turnpike

Posted: Updated:
FREMONT, Ohio (AP) - A grand jury in northern Ohio has declined to issue charges related to a series of pileups during a March snowstorm that left three people dead on the Ohio Turnpike.

Investigators concluded that unsafe speed and poor driving were among the causes of the pileups.

The State Highway Patrol said crashes on March 12 damaged 126 vehicles and left 49 people hurt along the toll road that crosses northern Ohio. The worst of it happened where three people died on a snowy, 2-mile stretch of the turnpike's eastbound lanes, halfway between Cleveland and Toledo.

The case against two drivers in connection with those crashes was presented Tuesday. The Sandusky County prosecutor told The Blade newspaper in Toledo that he doesn't know why the grand jury decided against issuing any charges.
