Dreams of a new high school in Austintown dashed by voters

Posted: Updated:
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -
Austintown voters turned down a 4.1 mill bond issue Tuesday night.

The district had hoped to use that money to build a new high school.  Administrators said the state recommended the district build a new school since the building needed a whole new HVAC system.  In order to just repair that system, students would be put in trailers for over a year and the school would have to be closed.

"We're going to get $31 million from the state and it was a great opportunity, and we'll have to decide if we are going to put something on for August or move forward and be a lapse district. If we become a lapse district, that means we have to raise the money ourselves and ask the state for the $31 million, if it's still there," said Vincent Colaluca, Austintown Local Schools Superintendent.

Colaluca said the state would pay for 47% of the project.  He thinks that contribution will still be available for another couple years.
