Downsizing ahead for Howland schools after levy failed

Posted: Updated:
HOWLAND, Ohio -
The Howland School District was looking for more money to pay for day-to-day operations.

Unfortunately, like many school districts asking for new money on Tuesday, their additional 3.9 mill levy was voted down.

The superintendent said the district reduced 37 teaching positions and support staff over the last few years and they had wanted to put an end to the downsizing and change focus on maintaining programs.

"We've been downsizing programs when our folks have retired as teachers or support staff. We're going to continue to do that. I'm sure there will be changes to services, whether it's bussing or other types of things, where we can be more efficient," said John Sheets, Howland Superintendent.

The school board will likely choose to put another levy on the ballot in November.
