COLUMBUS, Ohio -

A visiting Judge from Stark County has been assigned to hear a case seeking removal of Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith.

The Ohio Supreme Court, assigned Judge Richard David Reinbold, Junior to preside over the case brought by an employee.

Kendell Lee Stauffer Jr. of Girard filed the suit claiming that Smith created an unlawful interest in a public contract by hiring a business partner as his Director of Governmental Affairs.

The suit also alleges that Smith falsified his 2007, 2010 and 2011 Financial Disclosure Statements that he filed with the Ohio Ethics Commission.

A few days after that lawsuit was filed, State Agents assisting the Ohio Ethics Commission, seized documents, and other items from Smith's office.  It is not known if that investigation is related to the civil lawsuit.

Smith's attorney has told 21 news the Engineer is cooperating with the investigation and looks forward to resolving any concerns.
