Penguin football coach and Bishop excited about Tressel as YSU president

Posted: Updated:
Reaction is filtering in to our newsroom following a decision by YSU trustees to select former coach Jim Tressel as university President.

21 News reporter Matt Stone caught up with current YSU football head coach Eric Wolford for his reaction to the former Penguin coach being tapped for the top university spot.

Wolford said he's excited about the news. "He's already had a huge impact, and we'll have a chance to see him make another big impact on this Valley."said Wolford.

Wolford believes that Tressel's talent for recruiting football players will translate into recruiting more students at YSU.

Bishop George Murry of the Youngstown Diocese calls Tressel is a man of great faith and calls his appointment a positive decision for YSU.

"I'm very happy to be a part of the university community and Jim Tressel just brings an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to the university. So i think it's a great choice." said Bishop Murry.

President and CEO of the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, Tom Humphries says he's ready to work with Tressel. "I believe they chose a person who will provide outstanding leadership to the university and will work in a united front with other Mahoning Valley business and community leaders to improve university's performance, our students' educational attainment and help grow our economy." said Humphries

The four YSU union presidents issued a joint statement saying Tressel will be an excellent ambassador and effective fundraiser for the University.

We believe he has an understanding of the past, is in a position to evaluate the present, and will strive to create a future that brings us together as a well functioning, nationally recognized urban research institution.

Congressman Tim Ryan called it a great day for the Mahoning Valley and northeast Ohio, calling Tressel the right leader to guide YSU through the challenging times ahead.

Ryan calls the appointment another chapter in the comeback story of the Valley

“This is a new beginning for our university; a time for revitalization and renewal at Youngstown State and the broader community. The challenges are many, but with our collective intellect, creativity and determination, we will meet these challenges and transform our region." said Ryan.

Ryan says the YSU student body will be the biggest beneficiary. "They will reap the benefits of President Tressel's leadership both on campus and with increased opportunities in the local economy." said Representative Ryan who also noted that everyone in the community has to be involved.

Ryan was one of several Valley leaders who lobbied to have Tressel selected as YSU President.
