"No damn 'glitch'" says Niles payroll clerk

Posted: Updated:
NILES, Ohio - Employees of the city of Niles did not receive the direct deposit of their payroll checks into their personal accounts on Friday because of what the city auditor told 21 News was a "glitch".

When direct deposits were not made for 200 hourly city employees on Friday,  Auditor Charles Nader told 21 News that the city was cutting paper checks that would be available by Friday afternoon.

But city payroll clerk Karen DeChristofaro told reporter Danielle Cotterman, "There was no damn glitch!"  DeChristofaro says that she called off sick two days this week, and there was no one else with the proper training to process the direct deposits.

DeChristofaro says  the same situation occurred a year ago when she called off sick.  She says that as part of the settlement of the resultant grievance, the auditor was supposed to train someone to perform DeChristofaro's duties.

DeChristofaro says she will not be held hostage by her job.

Calling the matter a union issue, Auditor Nader had no comment. But he did say that he takes full responsibility for the situation, and promised to have someone trained so this doesn't happen again.
