BOARDMAN, Ohio - The red carpet was rolled out Saturday for women veterans.

At Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman the spotlight was on women veterans and their contribution to our country.

Ila Cochran served as a registered nurse for the American Nurse Corp from 1943 to 1946. Her uniforms were on display at the event. Cochran a 2nd lieutenant, was attached to the Air Force, taking care of our country's wounded. She said, "The worst patient I took care of was a patient in an air crash. He was thrown out of the fuselage and ended up in 100 octane gas, and was badly burned."

The panel of speakers ranged from World War II to those currently serving like Tech Sgt. Roberta Agne who is with the U.S. Air Reserves in Vienna. She loads and unloads planes, builds pallets and is a hazardous materials inspector. Agne served several tours overseas including to Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm, Turkey, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and a tour in Iraq. Agne said, "This Memorial weekend we all should remember the price of freedom. That there are those who died so we can enjoy spending time with our families."

In addition to health and educational tables, there was V.I.P. treatment. Connie Schaffer the women's health liaison for the Youngstown/Cleveland VA System, organized neck and hand massages, manicures, and the luncheon for the women. There was plenty of information on women's health issues, plus a fashion show by Dillard's.

The free event for women in the military was put on by the Cleveland VA system, Youngstown VA Voluntary Services along with a host of businesses. Jonny O's Great Events, provided lunch and the desert was from Clarencedale. Each participant had a photo op on the red carpet spotlighting how special they are.
