Ohio bill aims to prevent military identity theft

Posted: Updated:
CINCINNATI (AP) - Legislation before the Ohio Senate is intended to help prevent identity theft against military service members and their spouses.

The bill that already cleared the House would increase penalties and legal options in cases of identity fraud committed against those members of the military community.

Legal and consumer experts say damaged credit and large debt tied to ID theft can lead to military discipline. They also say innocent service members can find themselves wrongly linked to crimes by identity thieves' use of stolen information.

The Federal Trade Commission says ID theft continues to be the top complaint category nationally by consumers identifying themselves as military. The FTC says there were about 22,000 of those complaints in 2013.
