Veteran claims police posed improper questions about his service dog

Posted: Updated:
EAST PALESTINE, Ohio -

A disabled veteran arrested during a festival in Columbiana County is summoned to court to answer charges of disorderly conduct.

Police arrested Eric Goempel on Saturday at the East Palestine Street Fair, claiming police improperly questioned him about his service dog.

He says his arrest was disrespectful to all who have served in the military and now require the use of a service animal.

East Palestine Police Chief Kevin Dickey says he questioned Goempel about his dog because a few people at the fair were asking about the animal. Chief Dickey says Goempel was not arrested because he had a service dog, but because he became disorderly.

Dickey says the arrest could have been avoided if Goempel just answered a few questions.

Goempel pleaded not guilty to the charges and the case will go to trial.
