Third suspect in Liberty hostage situation captured

LIBERTY TWP, Ohio -

A fugitive wanted for his alleged part in a Liberty hostage situation is now in the Trumbull County jail charged with burglary, complicity to commit kidnapping and obstructing official business.

35-year-old Ralph Smith Junior was arrested by U.S. Marshals at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday on Youngstown's North side.

Investigators say that Smith and two other individuals broke into a home on Hadley Ave in Liberty ten days ago and held eight residents, including a four year old child, hostage for more than three hours.

Sandra M. Pavelko-Smith, 47, of Youngstown, Kenneth E. Macek, 68, of Boardman and Smith, allegedly kicked in the door of the home and held the residents at gun point threatening to kill everyone. Reports say the intruders took everyone's cell phones to prevent them from calling police.

Pavelko-Smith and Macek surrendered to officers and were charged with felony counts of assault, burglary, and kidnapping in addition to counts of simple assault and inciting panic. Smith fled the scene when the responding officers arrived.

Police say the incident stemmed from a dispute with Pavelko-Smith, who claims the victims stole a car from her.
