Mahoning Valley remembers fallen officers

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

Friday was a day set aside to remember law enforcement officers who gave their lives in service to their communities.

The "Annual Fallen Officers Memorial" was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Youngstown.

A last roll call was read for twenty-six officers who died in the line of duty in the Mahoning Valley.

Twenty-six red roses were placed in a wreath to remember each and every one of them, and then a 21 gun salute was given to honor their service and sacrifice.

Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says, "To me the importance of ceremonies like this is to keep the memory alive for those officers who have fallen. Also to give thanks to the families as well that have sacrificed, the children."

Nationwide 112 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2013.
