NEW MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -

A ground breaking ceremony took place in New Middletown on Saturday in what will be a new chapter in the history of the school district.

The community, honored guests, and students joined the Springfield Local School District at the site of the new school which will be on Route 170 adjacent to the high school entrance.

Tom Yasvac, assistant superintendent and elementary school principal said, "It will be historic to get a building that will be state of the art and set up perfectly for all learning conditions. It will just be wonderful."

The assistant superintendent told 21 News that Superintendent Debra Mettee, teachers, and staff, are thankful for the commitment from the community to replace the elementary school which is 91 years old. Additions were made in 1952, 1957, and 1989 but there have been boiler repair problems and security concerns. At the current school, when people are buzzed into the building they have immediate access to two kindergarten classrooms before they reach the office.

Parents like Jaime Byler and her daughter Cloe are excited about the new learning environment. Byler said, "That's probably my favorite part. Knowing that the kids are more safe because of the security system. That is one of the most important aspects to all parents and students."

Ground is expected to be broken by the construction company around the second week of June. Yasvac said, "It should be about a 52 week project with occupancy anticipated for June 23, 2015. It's a 52,000 square foot building that is single story and should span about 500 feet."
