Shots fired after Boardman grocery store theft attempt

Posted: Updated:
BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Police say two suspects are under arrest in connection with an attempted theft at the Sparkle Market on South Avenue Monday afternoon, during which shots were fired by a security guard.

The store guard tells police he was pushed by a man who he believes was trying to steal shrimp from the store.  The guard says he pursued the suspect who ran away.

The guard couldn't catch the would-be thief and was walking back to the store when he says a green Dodge Intrepid tried to run him over.  The guard wasn't hit, but says he fired off two shots at the car, which contained a man and a woman.  Police think the vehicle was intended to be the getaway car for the theft suspect. There are no reports of anyone being struck by the gunshots.

"At this time we are going to investigate the whole thing. We cant make any determinations right now, but a security guard has the same justification as you or I do to defend himself if he feels his life is in danger.", said Boardman Police Sgt. Brian Habeger.

Two suspects have been taken into custody by another police department on unrelated charges. Boardman Police anticipate both suspects will officially be charged Tuesday with felonious assault and robbery.
