Mahoning County Commissioners ponder public poll on sales tax

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County commissioners may ask the voters what they want to do about replacing a half percent sales tax that is set to expire in September of 2015.

Last month, voters turned down an request to renew the sales tax, and make it permanent.

On Thursday, commissioners talked about scheduling public hearings on a tax, but also suggested the possibility of conducting some type of poll to gauge public sentiment about the issue.

"I think you need to know the feeling of the people, they need to understand what this sales tax is all about," said Carol Rimideo Righetti, Mahoning County Commissioner.

Righetti said the cost of the poll would not come from the general fund but through donations.

County officials said the tax generates approximately $16-million for the general fund, and that 74 percent of the general fund is spent on public safety and the judicial system.

Since the sales tax renewal doesn't expire until late next year, commissioners have two more elections to decide if they are going to place it back on the ballot.

    Three people were taken to different hospitals following a crash involving five vehicles on State Route 82 in Howland. Dispatchers say four cars sustained heavy damage in the accident that happened around 5:20 p.m. Thursday.
