Changes planned for Boardman High School commencement

Posted: Updated:
BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Family members and friends of students graduating from Boardman High School this weekend can expect something a bit different at commencement ceremonies.

For years now, it's been a tradition that graduating boys wear maroon robes, and girls wear white robes during the ceremony.
But this Sunday, all graduates will be wearing maroon colored robes.

And instead of having boys and girls sitting on opposite sides of the aisle as has been the tradition, graduates will be mixed by gender, accepting their diplomas in alphabetical order.

The changes are inspired by the philosophy of high school principal Jared Cardillo, who tells 21 News that when he started the job last year, he brought with him the motto,"Getting things done together".

Cardillo says he wants to send a message of unity, and he believes that the concept of wearing different colored graduation robes doesn't fit in with that that philosophy.

Commencement is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
