Trial set today for Youngstown man accused of holding woman hostage

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A Youngstown man is scheduled to go on trial today for allegedly beating and choking his girlfriend, then holding her against her will for nearly a week.

49-year-old Gunther Owen has been jailed without bond since early February, when he was charged with felonious assault, and two counts of kidnapping.

On January 17, Youngstown police were called to the Fifth Avenue Community Church where they found Antjaunette Johnson suffering from broken blood vessels in both eyes, as well as several cuts and bruises on her face and neck.

Johnson told officers that six days earlier, she was punched and kicked repeatedly by Gunther at their Thornton Avenue home.

Johnson says she passed out. When she regained consciousness, she says Gunther tied a rope around her neck until she again passed out.

She also claims that Gunther kept her locked inside their home for six days, so she could not go to the hospital and report the incident.

Johnson told police that Gunther told her that she was playing with his feelings because she doesn't love him.
