Weather Service: No tornado in Columbiana County

Posted: Updated:
LISBON, Ohio - Experts from the National Weather Service toured Lisbon on Thursday, and determined that storm damage from the previous night was not caused by a tornado.

Homes were damaged and trees and wires were downed by what the Weather Service calls a down burst.

"Typically, a down burst is a mass of cold air that descends out of a thunderstorm that can have a lot of rain and hail," said Mathew Kramar with the National Weather Service.

However, the Weather Service said that destruction caused by 80 to 90 mile per hour winds can cause damage nearly as severe as a tornado.

The city is asking Ohio Governor John Kasich to declare a state of emergency in Lisbon.

One family is trying to pick up the pieces after a falling tree heavily damaged their Sherman Street home during the storm. With tears in her eyes, Mary Bowser told 21 News that she lived in the more than century old home for 33 years.

She was at home with five other people at around 5:00 p.m. when she heard a noise and looked outside to find a tree had fallen on her home. The damage was so extensive, the home will have to be demolished. Bowser and her family will have to find another place to live. No one was injured.

Three other homes sustained heavy damage.

Four people sought refuge at a shelter set up by the Columbiana County Emergency Management agency at The First United Methodist Church, 114 East Washington St.

Damage assessment teams are working with local residents. First Energy expected to have all power restored by 8 p.m. Thursday.

There are reports that a teenaged boy was struck by lightning. However, police and an aunt says that although the boy received a shock, he was not struck by lightning.

Columbiana County officials have established a public information line for the citizens of Columbiana County.

The county advises citizens with non-emergency inquiries and concerns to call 330-424-9725 or 211

Residents who detect an odor of gas or have another emergency to report should call 911.
