Tressel takes over as YSU president this week

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Jim Tressel begins performing his new duties as president of Youngstown State University on Friday, which is ten days earlier than originally planned.

When trustees hired Tressel, they announced that his start date would be July 1, when his contract with the University of Akron ran out.

YSU spokesperson Ron Cole tells 21 that the former football coach will take office early because interim President Ikram Khawaja is going on vacation, and then will begin his retirement.

Cole says Tressel will be paid for the extra days worked, on a pro rated basis.  Tressel's starting salary is 300 thousand dollars..

Tressel has already attended several YSU Board of Trustee meetings.

He and his wife Ellen have moved into the Pollock house on Wick Avenue
