BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday, smoke began billowing out of a business plaza along Market Street in Boardman.

The building housed a Subway restaurant, All State Insurance, M Sanko Photography, and Center Stage Music.

Witnesses called 9-1-1 and then tried to make sure everyone inside got out.

"It wasn't that bad at first, when we first started, but as soon as we pulled in the back here it was bad. The back corner here, it was a lot worse than what we expected, we're just glad we got the call in as soon as we could," said Zach Williams.

Fire officials don't know how many people were inside the four businesses when the fire started, but they said everyone got out okay.

"Smoke started coming from the ceiling. We were out. Within five minutes, the place was up in flames," said Dean Cenneno, with Center Stage Music Productions.

When fire crews arrived, they said the entire building was engulfed. It appeared the fire started somewhere in the middle of the building, but they are not sure yet what caused it.

Officials did say they had been called out to the building in recent weeks.

"We were here for a strange odor, I wouldn't even call it a smoke odor. It was just a strange electrical odor. We weren't able to find anything. We haven't had any complaints since," said Don Kloes, Boardman Assistant Fire Chief.

Because of Tuesday's high temperatures, neighboring fire departments from Poland and Beaver Township were called out to help battle the blaze and offer some relief to the Boardman Fire Department crew.

Market Street was temporarily shut down, while crews ran a water line across the roadway.

The building is a total loss and an investigation continues into the cause of the blaze.
