Youngstown churches strive to help city's roughest neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Several churches in Youngstown will be going into the city's highest crime neighborhoods to try and spread a message of hope.

The Community Initiative to Reduce Violence kicked off their summer events Tuesday at Victory Estates on the city's east side. The goal of the outreach program is to let people know about different programs and community help that is available.

Rafael Cruz of Unity Baptist Church said they seek those people in need, knowing that many of them will not ask for help on their own.

"Most of them aren't going to come looking for the help. If we don't come to them, they aren't going to have any hope at all. We have to come where they are," Cruz said.

Fourteen events are planned for this summer. The biggest one will be held in late August in downtown Youngstown.
