Corbett's 4th budget could be toughest fight yet

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania lawmakers and Gov. Tom Corbett are under pressure to finish next year's budget before the June 30 deadline, but this year's negotiations are shrouded in even more uncertainty than usual.

Corbett told reporters last week he wants pension savings before he considers additional taxes, but the fact that he's left the door open to new revenues is a marked shift from his previous staunch opposition to taxes.

The Republican governor also seems willing to miss the budget deadline despite repeatedly listing on-time budgets among his accomplishments.

The House is poised to take up a budget proposal that the sponsor says will include new revenues.

Corbett is behind in the polls to his Democratic challenger. What happens in Harrisburg in the coming weeks will be fodder for the campaign trail.
