Area hockey players participate in benefit game

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A young man unable to pursue his passion for hockey got back out on the ice Saturday.
23 year old Dean Macklen is battling three rare bone cancers: mast cell leukemia, histiocytic sarcoma and teratoma. The illness stopped him from playing the game he has loved since childhood.
However, the Struthers graduate was joined by area hockey players to participate in the puck drop at his very own special event called More Than Just a Game at the Ice Zone.
His mother Rebecca Macklen said this event meant the world to her son.

"A hockey family really is a family, and we have made some beautiful beautiful friends over the years with hockey and I know it means a lot to Dean that they're doing this," she said.

Although all proceeds will go toward the Macklen family, raising money wasn't the point of the event. Organizers said they just wanted to give Macklen a good feeling and play a game in his honor.
