New banners designed to boost downtown Salem

SALEM, Ohio -

Downtown Salem is about to get an updated look, thanks to the Salem Renaissance and a local foundation.

David Schwartz, president of Salem Renaissance, said 115 new banners will hang on each light pole downtown. The banners haven't been ordered yet, but the group has finalized the artwork for them.

Project Graphics of Vermont is designing the banners, which have been fully funded by grants from the Pearce Foundation.

The white, green and gold colored banners display a dove carrying an olive branch to symbolize Salem as a city of peace.

The banners will also display various themes including, pride, culture, progress and historic downtown Salem.

Schwartz said the original banners were purchased 12 years ago with durability in mind. However, Schwartz said the new banners were selected on the basis of the visual appeal for downtown, rather than how long they will last.

While Schwartz expects the banners to be put up later this summer.
