Niles 10-year-old "Pilot for a Day"

Posted: Updated:
VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -

A 10-year-old boy from Niles got the thrill of a lifetime courtesy of the 910th Airlift Wing.  Ethan Libert became the latest "Pilot for a Day", at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station on Wednesday.

The purpose of the "Pilot for a Day" program is to reach out to the community by providing a day of activities to children who live with a chronic or life-threatening disease or illness. Ethan is currently receiving treatment for type one diabetes at Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Ethan was sworn in as an honorary Air Force Reserve 2nd Lieutenant. "When we got here, I got out of the car and we met up with a couple of U.S. Marines and the Air Force and they talked about a couple of the things we were going to do today.", said Ethan.

Children selected for the program visit the base, receive a genuine aircrew flight suit and other mementos. They receive a tour of the base, including a visit to the Life Support shop, firing the Fire Arms Training Simulator, a ride on a base fire truck and being taxied aboard a $33 million C-130 Hercules aircraft down the main runway.

The Youngstown Air Reserve Station Base-Community Council is the financial co-sponsor of the program.
