Salem man admits smoking pot before fatal crash

Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A Salem man told state troopers that he smoked marijuana the day his car slammed into a utility pole, causing fatal injuries to a passenger.

On Thursday, the Mahoning County Grand Jury handed up an indictment charging 24-year-old Jonathan Shellenberger with aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

A report filed by the Ohio Highway Patrol says Shellenberger's car swerved off Garfield Road in Goshen Township on March 24, and struck a pole.

A passenger in the car, 23-year-old Anthony Colon of Salem, was critically injured and died later.

When a state trooper asked Shellenberger if he had used marijuana in the previous 24 hours, Shellenberger responded, "I smoked a joint."

Shellenberger told the trooper that his car struck a pot hole and he lost control.
