Man who spent prison time for killing a Mercer County woman now facing charges in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

A man who spent 30 years in prison for raping and killing a Mercer County woman is now a murder suspect in Michigan.

This comes less than two years after his release.

Shawn Jarrett is currently in a Michigan jail charged with the sexual assault of an 85-year-old Grandville woman.

Now he is also named a suspect in the murder of Berta Yolanda Reyes of Walker, Michigan.

Howland's police chief says he was warned about Jarrett's violent past when he moved to the township after his release in 2012.

Chief Paul Monroe says these new charges, make him angry. "I'm disappointed. I feel that it's somewhat of a failure on the part of our government."

In 1982, Jarrett was convicted of raping and murdering his neighbor, a 64-year-old Farrell woman, and attacking a Sharon woman in her home.
