Funds being raised for the Northern California documentary is labor of love for Artistic Family of Lighting Connoisseurs

“The idea of juxtaposing a rawer DIY hand held style with slick and intoxicating visual show elements grounds the audience with the characters in their struggle to create, and then shares the payoff during moments of light show victory. Formal sit down interviews will be peppered on top, providing further audience insight and appreciation into the lives of the characters, the collective, and the shows they create.”

Oakland, Calif. – Independent filmmaker, Alyssa Moran, launches her Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the feature length documentary, “Radiant Atmospheres, A Documentary.” Ending on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 3:43 PM PDT, the filmmaker has 30 days to meet her funding goal of $10,500. The minimum goal must be met in order for Moran to receive funds. Anyone wanting to support the project should visit www.kickstarter.com/projects/404649218/radiant-atmospheres-a-documentary.

Radiant Atmospheres, an Oakland-based artist collective, has been doing summer tours with their psychedelic light shows for almost 20 years. Providing kinetic spectacles to outdoor electronic dance parties all over Northern California is a labor of love for this ragtag family of brilliant minds and misfit personalities. The project website, www.radiantatmospheresmovie.com, includes a teaser reel and many pictures from previous annual shows.

The film will bring the audience into the fold of the unique culture of artistic event lighting, programming and stagehandery. Viewers will be warmly embraced into the family, presented with the history, and invited to share in the love, work, struggles, and triumphs. Moran notes, “The audience will be reached by watching relatable interesting characters, as they push through difficulties and drama during the physical creation of magically bizarre dreamscapes. What I offer is a chance to vicariously live in the world of Radiant Atmospheres.”

Radiant Atmospheres, A Documentary will initially be approached as a piece of cinma vrit. Shot hand held over the course of a few show seasons, an attempt will be made to meld the camera with the crew, capturing candid footage from show planning to execution and strike. Along the way, Moran will also collect more polished footage of each light show while in full swing. This polished footage will include compound camera moves incorporating sliders, dollies and jibs.

“I am excited to explore this artistic endeavor with a greater community that might have otherwise never had the pleasure of witnessing a Radiant Atmospheres light show,” Moran fondly stated about the project. “I am also a contributing member of the collective and I want to celebrate and preserve what Radiant Atmospheres is doing with their genius-harebrained light shows. Artistic lighting at live events is often times overlooked and underappreciated.”

Joe Heath, the project cinematographer, explains, “The idea of juxtaposing a rawer DIY hand held style with slick and intoxicating visual show elements grounds the audience with the characters in their struggle to create, and then shares the payoff during moments of light show victory. Formal sit down interviews will be peppered on top, providing further audience insight and appreciation into the lives of the characters, the collective, and the shows they create.”

Funds raised will primarily go towards the camera department and essential production needs such as lodging, food and water while shooting on location. The lighting situations and working conditions the camera team is required to film under are adverse, and polished camera movements require care. Moran notes, “I simply seek to provide the camera team with the proper tools to complete the shooting process.”

If the goal of $10,500 is not met, the project does not receive any money and all funds will be returned to those who make a pledge.
