July 4th traffic crackdown planned for the Valley

Posted: Updated:
BOARDMAN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -

Law enforcement agencies in the Valley say they will step up efforts for enforce traffic laws this long holiday weekend.

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force says it will conduct a corridor enforcement blitz sometime during the three days of the July Fourth observance.

The blitz will include police officers from participating agencies, and target several roads in Mahoning County.

Boardman Police say they will also supplement regular patrols with high-visibility enforcement patrols during the period.

Officers will be targeting speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and operating a vehicle while under the Influence (OVI) of Alcohol and/or Drug related violations.

Seat belt usage will also be an emphasis of the extra enforcement patrols.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the July Fourth weekend is one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to alcohol-impaired driving crashes.

NHTSA reports that in 2012, there were 179 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Of those fatalities, nearly half of those occurred in crashes where at least one driver or motorcycle operator was impaired or under the influence.

The crackdown is part of the department’s ongoing participation in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign.

The funding for the additional patrols is provided by an Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) federal traffic safety grant from NHTSA.
