WARREN, Ohio -

A Warren man is accused of falsifying his records in order to get license plates designated for wounded war veterans.

Keith Chandler appeared in Warren Municipal Court on Thursday on charge of tampering with records.

Authorities say Chandler misled the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in order to obtain Purple Heart plates.

The Purple Heart is a decoration awarded by the United States to those wounded or killed, while serving in the military.

"For someone to falsify a document to claim that very distinguished award, I find that extremely repugnant," said Greg Hicks, Warren City Law Director.

The Department of Motor Vehicles traced his record and uncovered the alleged crime.  Investigators said that Chandler received a bad conduct discharge.

If convicted, Chandler faces up to five years in prison
