Ohio panels to study drugs, unemployment issues

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The leader of the Ohio House says two bipartisan panels will study the issues of drugs and unemployment compensation debt this summer.

The committees will hold hearings around the state, allowing lawmakers to collect information while they are away from the Capitol on summer break.

House Speaker William Batchelder says it gives residents a chance to voice their opinions and meet their representatives. The hearings will inform a report on the issues and possible legislative recommendations.

One study committee will examine law enforcement perspectives on the widespread illegal use of prescription painkillers and heroin, along with the drugs' impact on families. Another panel will study unemployment compensation debt and reducing burdens on businesses.

Batchelder says previous summer hearings have brought to light ideas that were later incorporated in legislation.
