Teen athlete sues to play football for Struthers

STRUTHERS, Ohio -

A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a Struthers High School senior, who says he is being denied a chance to play football for the Wildcats.

According to rules of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, high school students (grades 9-12) who turn 19 years of age prior to August 1, 2014, are ineligible for interscholastic athletics.

The lawsuit filed in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court says the OHSAA should consider special circumstances and make an exception for 19-year-old Luke Witkowski.

His lawyer says the teen’s family came to the United States from Poland when he was 6 years old and was held back in third grade due to the language and assimilation challenges he faced through no fault of his own.

The suit seeks an injunction to permit Witkowski to continue participating in the school’s football program.

21 News attempted to seek comment from the OHSAA, however the offices are closed for the weekend.
