OH trial nears in slaying of Pearl Harbor survivor

Posted: Updated:

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The trial begins this month for a northeast Ohio man accused in the 2007 slaying of an 87-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor.

The (Canton) Repository reports (http://bit.ly/1oTLRAx) that 34-year-old Chester R. Crank stands trial in the fatal shooting of Bennie Angelo starting the week of July 21.

Crank was indicted by a grand jury in November. He faces aggravated murder and other charges. Prosecutors have said they aren't seeking the death penalty.

Crank was arrested in late September after police say he admitted to killing Angelo in tape-recorded conversations with an undercover informant. Police believe he started a fire to cover up the slaying.

His defense attorney had challenged the undercover recordings.

The newspaper reports a widely displayed poster broke open the case that had remained unsolved for seven years.
