Akron, union make pitch for new Goodyear plant

Posted: Updated:
AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Local union leaders are working with Akron and surrounding Summit County to persuade Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. to build its new $500 million plant in northeast Ohio, where the company was founded.

Akron's mayor sent a letter to Goodyear's CEO, and the city council passed a resolution on the issue. The president of United Steelworkers Local 2 says they've informed Goodyear that they'll do whatever they can to get the new facility in the Akron area.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that's the approach they took several years ago in persuading Goodyear to keep its headquarters in Akron.

In May, Goodyear announced plans for a state-of-the-art factory that would make about 6 million tires a year. It said it would consider sites in both North and South America.
