Authorities identify apparent Newton Township drowning victims

Posted: Updated:
Authorities have released the names of a father and son who apparently drowned during a fishing trip over the weekend.

Searchers recovered the body of 48-year-old Anthony Harris Sr. of Youngstown from Rankins Lake on Sunday.  The body of 21-year-old Anthony  Harris Jr., was found Monday morning.

The younger Harris is a former football player for Youngstown Christian School. His father was employed by RG Steel.

The men went out on the lake at approximately 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Around 8:00 p.m. that night, the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call to check on a vehicle at the lake that had Mahoning County plates.

A search on foot around the lake turned up no sign of the men Saturday night.

Dive teams from Mahoning and Trumbull Counties and water rescue crews from Champion, Warren Township, Lordstown and Mecca assisted the Newton Falls Fire District in the thirteen hour search on Sunday.

Harris Jr. was known by many as number 54. The former Youngstown Christian School defensive lineman was known as a leader on and off the field.

"Anthony was one of a kind, he was a great inspiration, great leader, great human being, just one of those kids that you gravitated to," Dolph Carroll says, YCS athletic director.

The school has invited pastors to console former teammates at their conditioning practice Monday night. School President Mike Pecchia says they're keeping his mother in their prayers-- many looked up to the family, who are described as being strong in their faith.

"This is one of those things where kids ask 'why', and we don't know why, we can only go with the hope that we know as Christians," Pecchia says.

The Trumbull County Coroner is investigating. The canoe the two took out onto the pond was not licensed and authorities say they were not wearing life vests.
