WARREN, Ohio -

A former Niles youth football league coach has been sentenced after being convicted of a sex charge.

Forty-one-year-old James Ingles, Jr. pleaded guilty to one of the two charges of gross sexual imposition that were filed against him last year when he was accused of having sexual contact with a nine-year-old girl

During sentencing on Thursday, Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ray Rice placed the former Niles Little Red Dragon coach on probation for five years.

Defense attorneys argued that alcohol abuse was a factor in Ingles actions at the time.

A representative of the Niles Red Dragon Executive Board told 21 News at the time of the arrest, that Ingles had passed the background checks when he was hired.

Ohio does not have a law that requires background checks for volunteers, coaches and those who work with children.
