Fine paid for Ohio veteran cited for therapy ducks

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio Army veteran accused of violating a village ban by keeping 14 pet ducks says he wants his day in court, even though someone else paid his fine for having the ducks, which he says are therapeutic.

The Coshocton Municipal Court clerk's office says the $140 fine and court costs for Darin Welker of West Lafayette were paid online by a Newtown, Pennsylvania, man.

Welker was cited for not complying with a ban on residents keeping farm animals in the village.

Welker says he was injured in Iraq and uses the ducks for physical and emotional therapy. He tells the Coshocton Tribune he didn't plan to plead guilty at his hearing, scheduled Wednesday.

The clerk's office says the hearing will go on because Welker hasn't signed a waiver.

    The Trumbull County Engineer's Office has released more information about plans to widen a road in Brookfield Township. The engineer says construction is scheduled to start in fall 2019 on a project to widen and improve Bedford Road from Route 62 to Stewart-Sharon Road. The improvements will include new driveway aprons, curbing, drainage improvments, pavement markings and signs.
