Court denies appeal of man convicted of killing George Junior Republic counselor

HARRISBURG, Pa. -

A 27-year-old man serving a life sentence for  killing a Mercer County juvenile detention center counselor has lost his appeal.

Jeremy Melvin was sentenced ten years ago for the murder of Wayne Urey at George Junior Republic.

Melvin, who was 17-years-old at the time of the crime, claimed that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to sentence juveniles to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

However the judges of the Pennsylvania Superior Court ruled that the Supreme Court decision being cited by Melvin was issued last year, and does not apply to sentences handed down before that time.

Melvin and Anthony Machicote were both sentenced to life in prison for the 2003 strangulation death of  Urey when they escaped from the youth center.
