Butler Institute of American Art displays MLK sculpture

Posted: Updated:

A special Martin Luther King, Jr. sculpture is on display at the Butler Institute of American Art.

The 300 pound bronze piece was made by artist John Wilson in 1982.  A noted sculptor, painter and print-maker, Wilson is best known for his portraits of African-American men.

The piece is a maquette, or prototype, for an eight foot sculpture that was installed in Buffalo, New York, in 1983.

It's currently on loan from the Mary Ryan Gallery in New York City and is located in the Beecher Court Gallery.

Along with the sculpture is a charcoal drawing of Dr. King by Wilson on loan from Martha Richardson Gallery in Boston.

Both pieces will be on display until November.
