Public can see 3-D printing at America Makes open house

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

If you want the inside story on 3-D printing and additive manufacturing, then you are in luck.

Everyone is invited to the first-ever public open house at America Makes in Youngstown this Sunday.  The open house, at 236 W. Boardman Street facility, is part of a kick-off for the Youngstown Maker Community Initiative.

It is Youngstown's response to a request by President Obama.

"The President announced a few months ago he wanted cities to really build networks and programs around making, using 3-D printing for everything from industrial applications to hobbies and artistry" said Barb Ewing, Chief Operating Officer of the Youngstown Business Incubator.

By opening it's doors to the public, America Makes is giving everyone the opportunity to learn more about and, experience firsthand how additive manufacturing is changing how we build things.

"The things you can build using this technology that you really can't make any other way. A lot of people think that it's only about printing plastics, but it's really about plastics, metal, ceramics, titanium, even body parts, it is truly amazing technology," Ewing said.

The open house will also include a visit by Make Magazine, the leading voice of 3-D printing.

"The fact that they want to establish this kind of relationship with America Makes, and participate in the Youngstown effort to kick this off, really says a lot about the caliber of America Makes and the good things that are happening here" said Ewing.

Local companies will also be on hand with demonstrations of how they are using 3-D printing. The open house is Sunday, August 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are available on-line by clicking here.
