Tentative agreement could stop talks to privatize Mercer County jail

Posted: Updated:

A deal is in the works that would not privatize the operations of the Mercer County jail.

Commissioner Matt McConnell said that he and Commissioner John Lechner hammered out a tentative agreement with the correction officers union representatives on Wednesday.

That contract offer still has to be voted on by the rest of the union.

Commissioners and the prison board have said the cost to run the jail is too high. The union has brought up safety concerns about lower paid and inexperienced employees under a private company.
