Sciortino opponent dropping out of Mahoning Auditor race

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

The only candidate challenging the re-election bid of Mahoning County Auditor Mike Sciortino is dropping out of the race.

Mahoning County Republican Chairman Mark Munroe issued a news release on Thursday, saying that the family of Bill Reese has informed the party that Reese expects to withdraw as a candidate due to unexpected health problems which involve surgery.

Munroe says that the party faces a deadline of 4:00 p.m. August 11 to name a replacement for the November ballot.

Democratic candidate and incumbent Mike Sciortino is currently under indictment for his alleged part in an attempt to cover up a conspiracy to keep Mahoning County from moving offices from property owned by a local businessman.

There are no independent candidates running for Mahoning County Auditor.

As a result of that indictment, a panel appointed by the Ohio Supreme Court is deciding if Sciortino should be prohibited from performing his duties as Auditor until the case against him is resolved.

Chairman Munroe writes, "With the current auditor under indictment and facing possible suspension, it’s urgent that we reach out to find best possible candidate to fill this very important county office.”

Munroe is asking potential candidates to contact him as soon as possible.

The Republican Party Central Committee will meet Sunday, Aug. 10, at 2:00 p.m.  to name an alternate candidate for county auditor. Interested candidates will have an opportunity to appear before the committee at that time.

Munroe says that candidates must be a registered Mahoning County voter and ideally will posses some combination of management, accounting, legal, banking, financial, governmental or similar experience suitable for the office.

Contact Chairman Munroe by calling Republican Party Headquarters at 330-629-7006.

Those interested may also contact the chairman by email:

Wellsville's City Council announced they were introducing an income tax levy on their ballot in November.  They are urging residents to vote in favor of the .05 percent income tax increase so they can afford to keep the police and fire departments open.  If the levy does not pass, the police and fire departments will be forced to shut down.  "We don't want to cut... our police department or the fire department," Mayor Nancy Murray said.
