Former Youngstown Mayor George Vukovich dies at 87

Services have been scheduled for former Youngstown Mayor George Vukovich, who died on Monday. His wife of 64 years was at his side at the time of his death.

Vukovich was born on September 8, 1926 in Youngstown. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Youngstown State University and is a veteran of the United States Army. 

He worked at Republic Steel before embarking on his political career, holding elected offices in the city of Youngstown for a span of 20 years including being the Mayor of Youngstown from 1980 to 1984. Vukovich was also was Seventh Ward Councilman and Clerk of Youngstown Municipal Court.

He was active in the Youngstown Democratic Party, a member of the Catholic War Veterans, the Croation Fraternal Union (Lodge 185, Campbell), and St. Angela Merici Parish (Sacred Heart of Jesus).

He married the former Helen Bogovich of Youngstown on June 24, 1950, and has two daughters and several grandchildren.

During retirement, Vukovich and his wife spent several winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida where he became an avid boater and beach walker.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in George’s memory to The Ursuline Center-Sister Jerome’s Poor, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, OH 44406
