Petition drive underway to reduce Youngstown city government

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

A petition drive is underway in Youngstown for a proposal to reduce city government from seven council wards to five.

Supporters of the charter amendment say the city has not had a redistricting in decades and the decline in population no longer supports the need for a seven member council.

“We're a different city. Two council seats could maybe equal two new police officers or another code enforcement officer or another firefighter. We have some budget issues coming ahead so we need to be cognizant of that,” said Mike Ray, 4th ward Youngstown councilman.

The Draw the Line effort is holding petition signing events this week. The first will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Erie Terminal Building on West Commerce Street. The second will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the B&O Farmers Market on Mahoning Avenue.

The drive needs about 1,300 valid signatures to place the question on the November ballot.
