Republicans choose candidate for Trumbull County Commissioner

LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio -

A former Air Force officer is the county Republican Party's choice to fill the unexpired term left by the late Trumbull County Commissioner Paul Heltzel.

The party made the decision at a meeting Tuesday night.

J.D. Williams of Liberty will run on the Republican ticket this November.

He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for almost 30 years and his service included three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Williams will run against Democrat Mauro Cantalamessa, who was sworn in on Monday as the temporary replacement to fill the the open position.

Williams retired from the Air Force in 2010 and has been employed as a pilot by United Airlines for almost 20 years.

    A second Community Opioid Summit was held at the Covelli Center in downtown Youngstown on Wednesday. The event was sponsored by the Mahoning County Juvenile Court Advisory Board and the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board.
