Board of elections to consider Newton Falls tax vote petitions

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Ohio -

The Trumbull County Board of Elections could decide next week if  voters in Newton Falls will be given a chance to reverse a decision by city council to rescind a tax break for some residents.

On Wednesday, petitions were submitted to the elections board, which will now decide if a referendum will be placed on the ballot in November.

The elections board is expected to confer with legal counsel before next Tuesday's meeting, since Newton Falls officials have indicated they will appeal a court ruling that allows the referendum.

Some citizens petitioned for a vote by the public after council revoked an ordinance that gave a one percent tax break to residents who pay a one percent or greater income tax to municipalities where their place of employment is located.
