Beaver and Columbiana residents warned about phony gas worker

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBIANA, Ohio -

Authorities are asking residents to beware of an apparent scam being used to gain access to area homes.

Columbiana Police took a report from a resident who says he was lured out of his home by a man claiming to be from the gas company who said he wanted to look at the boundary lines of the property.

When the resident went back inside the home, two bedroom doors had been pried open.

A similar incident was reported in Beaver Township in Mahoning County. Police say a man claiming to be a gas company employee came to the door of a home asking about the location of gas lines on the property.  The resident asked for identification. When the man could not provide an ID, he was turned away.

In both cases, the suspects are described as dark skinned white males with dark hair. In one case, the suspect was said to be driving a black, four-door, Dodge truck.

Columbiana police say officers were keeping an eye on West Railroad Street where the suspect was last seen.
